Meet the founder

I built UnleashU because I was tired of watching great teams depend on one person.

I’m Patrick Zimmer. For 28 years I’ve designed, delivered, and supported mission-critical IT systems, from NASA to hospitals, banks, factory floors, retail operations, and large-scale live events. I’ve done it on both sides: leading professional services projects that build those systems, and running managed services that keep them alive every day. The hardest problem was never the technology. It was the knowledge locked in someone’s head, while capable people on the front line waited for permission to solve the problem in front of them.

My story

Why I started this

Early in my career, I was the hero. I was the one who got the 2AM call, who knew how the firewall really worked, who couldn’t take a real vacation. It felt like job security. It was actually a single point of failure with a pulse.

The night it clicked, I was the problem. I was on a plane when a hospital’s firewall cluster failed over and stopped passing traffic to clinical systems, and the team on site, good engineers every one of them, stood still for three hours waiting for me to land because I was the only one who knew why it was built that way. I’d spent years being proud of being needed, and that night I saw what being needed actually cost.

That’s when I stopped asking “who knows how this works?” and started asking “why can’t the people closest to the problem solve it?” UnleashU is my answer. We work side-by-side with your frontline team so they can solve problems in the flow of work, and we leave the knowledge behind when we go. That’s how organizations become resilient: not by hiring more heroes, but by unleashing the people already there.

What I believe

Resilient organizations are built on the front line

01

The people closest to the problem should be able to solve it.

When frontline workers are empowered to unleash their potential, they solve problems in the flow of work instead of escalating them. That’s what makes an organization resilient.

02

Knowledge hoarding is a business risk, not a personality quirk.

When your expert leaves, your capability leaves with them.

03

Documentation should mirror experience.

If it describes the ideal state instead of what actually happened, nobody will use it.

04

You fall to your level of practice.

Teams that drill before the outage handle the outage. That’s why we built SimGym.

05

AI should sharpen thinking, not replace it.

The goal is a team that thinks better with AI, not one that stops thinking.

06

Hiring and development are shifting from technology to psychology.

Tools change every year. Curiosity, ownership, and the willingness to share compound forever.

Is your team one resignation away from chaos?

Take the Expert Dependency Score. It takes about 5 minutes and shows how much of your operation runs on undocumented knowledge, and how often your front line has to stop and wait for an expert. If your score is high, book a free 30-minute review with me. I’ll show you the first three things I’d fix.

Potential Unbound: the podcast and the writing

Potential Unbound is where I think out loud about technology, human potential, and how teams actually grow. It’s the “why” behind everything we do at UnleashU.

Speaking

Bring this conversation to your team or event

I speak to IT leaders, technology associations, and business groups about empowering frontline teams to solve problems in the flow of work, so the organization never depends on a hero. Every talk is practical, story-driven, and leaves the room with something to try on Monday.

Practice Like It’s Game Day

How to adopt AI so your people get sharper, not lazier.

Documentation That Isn’t Dead

Turning everyday problem-solving into knowledge your team actually uses.

Stop seeking heroes. Unleash the people you already have.

If your front line has to wait on a few people who “just know how it works,” your organization is less resilient than it looks. In 30 minutes, I’ll show you where the risk is and what to unlock first so your team can solve problems in the flow of work. No pitch deck. No obligation.
